I would never go to a tribute night, I would rather see the real thing.
I don't like tributes that attempt to take on the persona of the real person.
These are just two of the comments that have been made to me and, frankly, I don't understand their point of view but respect their opinion. Many of the tributes are extremely talented musicians, singers and entertainers in their own right but never had the break through to become top entertainers. They just happen to be able to imitate famous musicians and singers and do it well, well enough to make a full time profession from it.
I believe that many tribute artistes give excellent value for money, at a fraction of the cost of the "real thing" and are better than the current performances of older entertainers, or in some cases, the original performers have just stopped performing or no longer with us. Tina Turner and Freddie Mercury are just two examples and there are some excellent tribute artistes to these famous performers.
I don't really like this or that entertainer
This is another reason people give for not buying tickets to a tribute show.
I like a whole range of different styles of music from classical, opera, traditional jazz, pop music generally and hard rock. I don't necessarily like everything that each artiste produces but can usually find something that appeals.
Years ago, my wife and I decided that we would do our best to go out together regularly. We have gone to shows that we were certain were not to our taste and ended up having a brilliant night and totally surprised ourselves. Much of the enjoyment is going out together and with friends.
It's too far to drive and I cannot have a drink
We drive to our venues with the disco equipment and consequently have to drive home at the end of the evening. My wife stopped driving voluntarily about 5 years ago so I have forgone the pleasure of a pint or three. As an organiser, I made a decision anyway that alcohol and dealing with the club management and entertainers was not a good mix especially when introducing the entertainers as well.
So my usual drink has been ginger beer but at a recent event in Bradford on Avon they only had zero alcohol beers and I was pleasantly surprised at how much these have improved since I last tried them. I had a great night, 4-5 "beers", no risk of drink driving prosecution and no hangover in the morning.
Feel free to give me your opinions. I genuinely would be interested in what you have to say about tribute acts in general and, in particular, what you would be interested in seeing.
