Blazer for an important event

It all started as an apprentice in the composing room at a large printer in Andover where I learned my craft and practical jokes - there was always something going on. For example, Don was going to a special event and had ordered a blazer, made to measure, from Burtons. At that time (1960s) Burtons were notorious for not keeping delivery promises. Don was chasing hard - the event was the coming Friday night and the blazer was still not ready. Eventually Burtons promised to deliver the blazer to the work's reception. The problem was that Don had told just about everybody about the problem. Don worked in the stores and they all wore dark grey, long coats, that never got washed. His work mates cut a badly worn, absolutely filthy, coat into a jacket. Nicely folded it was wrapped in tissue paper, placed in a suitable cardboard box and delivered to reception. Don was excited to get the call from reception on Friday morning to say that a parcel had arrived from Burtons. Sadly the real blazer had still not been delivered but at least he had a jacket for the special occasion.

Fishing Competition

New neighbours move in opposite just before Easter, we introduced ourselves and gave them a friendly welcome. Easter was about a month later and we had a knock at the door and Angela asked me if I had a wheelbarrow, fork, spade and shovel that they could borrow. No problem, I got the tools and asked her what they were doing. Digging a fishpond, came the reply and away she went. I couldn't resist an opportunity like this, handed to me on a plate it was. I printed an A3 poster, Fishing Competition, fixed it to a post and sneaked across and hammed the post into the border. Next involved telephoning everybody on my contact list and asked them to ring their number and enquire what time the fishing competition started. Well, they stuck it out for a while and then decided to use call forwarding to send the calls back to me. What they didn't know was that we were ex-directory so they sent all the calls to another neighbour a few doors up - also called Smith. It's not a common name but it is used a lot and certainly was that day.
